Mike O’Donnell, former chief executive officer of the London CIV, is joining XTP – a specialist consultancy focusing on investment transparency, cost and risk – as a non-executive director (NED) and senior adviser.
He will support XTP’s growth plans in the public pension sector in the UK, it was announced.
For the past four years, O’Donnell was the CEO of London CIV, one of the UK’s largest Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) pooling organisations and the pension pool for the London boroughs and the City of London.
At London CIV, O’Donnell played a major role in successfully transforming and running the organisation in challenging times, including setting a 70% target for managing its member schemes’ combined assets by 2025.
Last April the London CIV announced O’Donnell would step down in a year’s time.
O’Donnell has more than 30 years of experience in local government finance and corporate services functions, having spent 13 years at the London Borough of Camden and serving as interim finance director at Birmingham City Council and the London Borough of Newham.
He is a former president of the Society of London Treasurers and a former chair of the London Finance Advisory Committee. He is also a former NED and chair of the Audit and Risk Committee of the London Pension Fund Authority.
O’Donnell said: “Local government pension plans need to navigate through challenging times. Pools will increasingly turn their attention towards cost efficiency to add value for clients while further improving investment governance. XTP’s offering is a perfect match.”
