EUROPE - A new official has taken over at the European Commission's internal markets department overseeing the implementation of the occupational pension fund directive.
Ivo van Es, who had been the point person at the Commission on the Institutions for Occupational Retirement Provision directive, told IPE that he has moved to the payments unit at Internal Markets directorate, working primarily on E-money and mobile payments.
His role would be taken over by fellow official Erich Eggenhofer, who has previously worked on company law issues for the Commission.
The personnel change comes at a time when the Commission is stepping up its legal challenge against EU member states for not implementing the IORP directive. Earlier this month it announced it planned to take Italy to the European Court of Justice over the matter, following similar moves against the UK and Slovenia.
It also began proceedings against the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland over the directive.
Elsewhere, the European Economic and Social Committee has elected Greece's Dimitris Dimitriadis as its new president for a two-year term. He takes over from Anna-Marie Sigmund.
