The manager of Norway’s huge sovereign wealth fund today announced it has launched a research project with a Swedish university to gauge the importance of psychological safety and resilience among investment staff.
Nicolai Tangen, chief executive officer of Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), which runs the NOK15.3trn (€1.3trn) Government Pension Fund Global, said: “This is a groundbreaking research collaboration that we are very proud to be a part of.
“We believe it can have a significant impact on our performance capability and how we work as an organisation,” he said.
The research link-up with Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) is to be run in collaboration with leading experts in the field, NBIM said, including Martin Carlsson-Wall, professor and director of the Center for Sports and Business at SSE, and Amy Edmondson, professor at Harvard Business School.
Edmondson authored the book “The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth”, NBIM said.
Since becoming NBIM CEO in September 2020, Tangen, a former hedge-fund tycoon, has emphasised the importance of the psychological resilience for people’s ability to take risks when managing investments.
Within the first few months of his leadership, NBIM hired sports psychologist Anders Meland to develop mental resilience amongst staff.
NBIM said today that it was now seeking knowledge on how it could further develop that work.
The aim of the new research project – which is to last for two years – was “to understand the mechanisms behind psychological safety and resilience among employees and how sports psychology can contribute to strengthening the fund’s performance culture,” the central bank arm said.
