EUROPE - Paul Thornton is to become the new senior partner at consultant Watson Wyatt Partners, the European arm of Watson Wyatt Worldwide, following the retirement of Bob Masding on April 30.

Thornton was formerly president of the UK Institute of Actuaries from July 1998 to July 2000 and chairman of the Association of Consulting Actuaries from June 1997 to June 1998.

Commenting on his appointment, he says: “Watson Wyatt has a strong ethos of professional excellence and a strong culture of team working. It will be very exciting to be senior partner of such a thriving firm. My aim will be to keep the firm at the forefront of people and financial management.”

Joining Watson Wyatt Partners in 1974 (then R Watson & Sons), Thornton qualified as a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 1975 and became a partner at Watson Wyatt in 1977.
He was chairman of the firm’s management committee from 1995 to 1997.
