ITALY – UBS Global Asset Management has hired BNP Paribas institutional sales manager Roberto Calchi in a bid to strengthen its position in the Italian institutional market.

Calchi joined the Swiss asset manager as senior client relationship manager on June 1. He joins a three-strong team.

He said that in his new capacity, he would operate within both the institutional and retail markets, as UBS’s policy was “client-oriented”.

“We cover both the areas,” he said, adding however that his arrival at UBS could be part of an effort to boost the company’s institutional approach .

Asked whether UBS was going to respond to last month’s tender by Cometa, the pension fund for mechanical and engineering employees, Calchi said he did not know yet for sure, but he thought not.

UBS’s Nicola Vasta told IPE that the recruitment of “someone with a background like Calchi” was linked with UBS’s plans for the institutional market already present.
